If you love the magic of patchwork, you're in for a treat with the Hidden Wells quilt block. It’s one of those blocks that looks intricate but is surprisingly simple once you break down the steps. Starting with basic strip sets, you can create a striking geometric design with just a few clever cuts and rotations.
Why Choose the Hidden Wells Block?
This block stands out for several reasons. First, it requires no fiddly piecing of tiny triangles or complicated measurements. Second, it's all about straight lines and satisfying rearranging. Whether you have jelly rolls or fabric scraps, this block is versatile for all your projects. You can also experiment with fabric placements to create bold effects that will make your quilts pop.
Supplies Needed for One Block
Before you begin, gather the following materials:
4 different fabric strips, each 18" x 2.5"
Rotary cutter and mat
Quilting ruler
Sewing machine and thread
Iron and ironing board
Step 1: Sew Your Strips Together
Begin by sewing your four strips together along the long edges with right sides together. Use a 1/4" seam allowance and press your seams in one direction.

Step 2: Cut the Strip
Next, cut the strip set in half, vertically. You should now have two square blocks. After cutting, trim each of these blocks to 8.5" squares.

Step 3: Rotate One Block
Take one of your 8.5" squares and rotate it a quarter turn clockwise or anti-clockwise. This will change the strip direction. One block will now have lines running vertically, while the other will remain horizontal.

Step 4: Sew the Blocks Together
Place the squares right sides together, ensuring that one is still rotated. Sew a 1/4" seam allowance around the entire square.

Step 5: Cut the Block
After sewing, cut the square diagonally from one corner to the opposite in both directions. This will give you four triangle shapes.

Step 6: Press the Triangles
Open each triangle and press them. You'll now have four squares measuring 5.5" each. Be sure to trim any tails on the seams for a clean finish.

Step 7: Arrange the Squares
Now, arrange the four squares. Alternate the direction of the stripes to create a woven or offset effect. There are various layouts you can use, so feel free to experiment.

Step 8: Sew Everything Together
Once you are happy with the arrangement, sew the squares together into two rows of two blocks. After that, sew the rows together to complete your Hidden Wells block!

Step 9: Final Press
Finally, give the whole block a good press. You can press seams open or to the side, depending on your preference. If necessary, trim your finished block to square it up neatly.
And That’s It!
You've just sewn a Hidden Wells quilt block! This technique is satisfying and fun to sew. Once you master it, you can explore colour placement, fussy cutting, or varying the strip widths for a completely different look.
