Barbie Movie 2023 - 20 Sewing patterns to recreate the fashion looks!

Hi Barbie!

Are you ready to dive into the dazzling world of Barbie and her latest movie? Well, get your pink fabrics together because here are plenty of sewing patterns to be inspired by! I've picked my favourite fashion moments from the Barbie movie and scoured the internet for the best sewing patterns to recreate these looks. Spoiler alert - any vintage 50's sewing pattern will do!

In the new Barbie movie, Margot Robbie and her Barbie co-stars show us how to serve Barbie World irl and the fashion is nothing short of jaw-dropping. From pink gingham dresses to to chic promo tour co-ords, Margot has been serving with every outfit. These sewing patterns will bring those iconic Barbie movie outfits to life. By sewing these stunning looks yourself, you can put your own spin on the Barbie looks and make something truly unique, of course, it doesn't have to be all pink and sparkles!

If you haven't seen the trailer yet, here it is -

Now let's get into the fashion!

Barbie's Gingham Dress

Starting with the iconic gingham dress, this flared skirt dress is every Barbie girls dream. And side note - how great does the Barbie World look? How I'd love to walk around that set!

The dress has a fitted bodice with centre darts giving the classic Barbie silhouette.

Here are my favourite versions of this dress, both Vogue sewing patterns and extremely close to the original dress!

With the Vogue Sleeveless Dress Sewing Pattern, refresh your summer style! The dress has a close-fitting, lined bodice with princess seams, side pockets, a narrow hem and a back zipper.

Vogue sewing pattern for Lined dress, close-fitting through bust and waist, has wide square neckline, flared skirt with diagonal gathers under the waistline, side seam pockets, low cut back with invisible zipper, stitched hem with horsehair braid, and contrast variations.

FABRICS: Mikado, Poplin, Lt. Wt. Twill, Sateen. Lining: Lining Fabric. Interfacing: Lightweight Fusible. Unsuitable for obvious diagonals.

Barbie Jumpsuit

The jumpsuits immediately caught my eye when I saw the trailer, I don't think I've seen a Barbie in a boiler suit but I love these hot pink all-in-ones!

Leah by Fibre Mood takes the classic workwear overalls and turns them into something special in the details with topstitching, chest pockets and commodious hip pockets. Wear it loose and oversized or belted at the waist with the self-fabric tie, for a feminine touch.

Fabric advice

Leah works well in a variety of 'workwear' fabrics. Choose from a bottom-weight fabric like cotton, denim or corduroy.

McCall's sewing pattern for Collared, buttoned coverall romper and jumpsuit with back pleat. Utility romper and jumpsuits have drop shoulders with long sleeves and cuffs. Also includes a sleeveless view with roll-up band. Side and patch pockets. Includes belt with D-ring buckles.

FABRICS: Twill, Denim, Cotton Blends, Corduroy.

Unsuitable for obvious diagonals.

Note: Fabric requirement allows for nap, one-way design or shading. Extra fabric may be needed to match design or for shrinkage.

President Barbie

This off the shoulder dress reminds me of some of the outfits my Barbie worn when I was little! A classy, chic dress with the flared skirt, you can't go wrong!

MISSES'/MISSES PETITE DRESS : Dress has semi-fitted, lined bodice with side front and side back seams, skirt and sleeve variations, and back zipper. Designed for lightweight to medium-weight woven fabrics.

FABRICS: Crepe, Taffeta, Wool Blends.

Halter Top

An every day summer look for Barbie, although it's hard to see in this clip I imagine it ties in a bow around the neck and has a 'sailor' theme, a bit like version number 4 from the pattern below.

70s Halter-Top pattern from the Vintage Sewing Pattern Company.

The halter-top V. 1 & 2 with bodice softly gathered to midriff have “V” shaped neckline, collar and back tie end closing V. 1 has embroidered eyelet edging. V. 1 & 3 have peplum stitched to midriff/ V.3 & 4 with gathered bodice has “sweetheart” neckline, midriff and back button closing.

Glitter jumpsuit

Now THIS would be my dream outfit as a kid. I actually think my mum made me one similar for a school disco! Here are a few sewing patterns that are very close -

Brandi Joan strapless jumpsuit has shaped front bodice with elasticated smocked back and side zip closure.

Mimi G Style Misses’ strapless jumpsuit and mini dress has boned princess seamed bodice, asymmetrical side drape, self ties and side zip.

Gingham Hat

A summer accessory and of course, matching the gingham dress from before. I struggled to find a sewing pattern with a big enough rim to match this one but here a hat that I think is just right -

Bell-Shaped Hat A has five panels and is lined. Wide-brimmed Hat B has lined crown, brim with topstitching detail and wire in outer edge. Open-crown Hat C has wide brim that is narrower in back, with topstitching detail and wire in outer edge. Lined Cap D has shaped crown and visor. Band has enclosed elastic that gathers at back.

Pink Cowgirl Outfit

This is one of the first outfits that was revealed when we found out there would be a Barbie movie. This look may not be the most practical in the real world, but here's an outfit that could be inspired by the cowgirl two piece -

This pattern is best made with a light or medium weight fabric with a nice drape quality to it as seen in the images below. A little stretch in the fabric will add extra comfort and enable you to make hip and waist area more fitting to your shape if needed.

A cropped vest with button up front.

These cropped waistcoats are very on trend and this version can be worn on it's own or with a top underneath.

This women's vest pattern is suitable for various sizes and body types.

You can customize it to your preferences by choosing your favourite fabric

and adding unique accents such as decorative buttons or embroidery.

The step-by-step instructions in PDF format are easy to follow,

making it suitable for both beginners and advanced sewers.

Pastel Pink Collared Dress and Beret

This was the trickiest dress to find. It has a very specific collar and puff sleeves that I could not find a sewing pattern for! The closest one I found was a Vogue dress with a collar and similar puff sleeves and it's definitely just as gorgeous as Barbie's! The second is a McCall's dress and although it isn't 100%, the vibe is there!

It’s perfect for an advanced beginner/intermediate dressmaker. Lined dress, close-fitting, has raised waistline, bust and waist darts, contrast collar with pre-gathered lace trim, above elbow length gathered puff sleeves with sleeve head, button front bodice, invisible back zipper, hook and eye closure at back of collar, regular hem and length variation.

Enjoy making this gorgeous reversible beret hat. Two hats in one, so pick two of your fave fabrics for this!

Vintage 1930s dress has slightly flared bias skirt with buttoned waist front. Gathers in side-waist front sections create fullness at the bustline. Dress has small round collar or tie collar, short sleeves gathered at shoulders with or without sleeve band. Side placket for snap closing. Sew Rating: Easy.

THE Barbie Swimsuit

The iconic Barbie swimsuit was the original outfit for the first Barbie dolls. The ponytail Barbie dolls sold in 1959 to 1961 were wearing the famous zebra striped suit. The outfit always included Black Open Toe Heels and White Sunglasses with Blue Lens.

It’s structured like an evening gown to flatter your figure, while still being fully functional for a day at the pool or beach, just like Barbie's! The Esther Swimsuit has an interior foam bra, boning, flattering corset-inspired side seams, and tons of figure control with the use of a power mesh underlayer. They've even added a back bra band so that you feel super supported in your suit.

The basic shape of this swimsuit is the perfect shape to recreate Barbie's classic look!

Margot Robbie Barbie Promo Gingham Set

The gingham theme carries on and we can only expect Margot Robbie to continue the fashion saga on the Barbie promo tour! This 3 piece set is adorable and can be recreated with these sewing patterns -

You can choose to close me with a multitude of buttons or with a tie on the side, and I can be made in two different lengths. I am perfect all year round – with high boots in winter, sandals for a trip to the beach or even sneakers or high heels for the office.

This easy fit unlined essential jacket will become your favourite go to garment for all seasons and all occasions, this will only be defined by your choice of fabric.
