Free Quilting Pattern: Sew a Heart Patchwork Table Runner

Updated: Jan 24

A Free Sewing Project: Heart Patchwork Table Runner

Red roses and chocolate hearts on a plate adorn a table with a red and pink quilt. Wine glasses, plates, and prosecco create a romantic setting.

If you’re looking for a quick, satisfying quilting project that uses simple techniques but feels really special once it’s finished, this heart patchwork table runner is a lovely one to try.

This free quilting pattern project is all about classic patchwork skills coming together in a relaxed, approachable way. You’ll sew half square triangles, use snowballed corners to shape the hearts, and finish everything off with self binding, which keeps the edges neat without needing separate binding strips.

Best of all, the instructions are available as a free PDF download, so you can save it, print it, and sew along at your own pace.

About the Project

The heart block at the centre of this design is simple to construct but really versatile. For the table runner, I’ve alternated the colours of the hearts to create contrast and movement across the length of the runner, but the same block works just as well for quilts, cushions, placemats, or even bags.

This is a great project if you:

  • Want to practise patchwork basics

  • Enjoy small quilting projects that don’t feel overwhelming

  • Like designs you can easily adapt or scale up later

The finished table runner makes a lovely seasonal piece, but it’s subtle enough to leave out all year if you choose your fabrics carefully.

Techniques used in this project:

In this tutorial, you’ll:

  • Sew half square triangles (HSTs)

  • Use snowballed corners to shape a heart block

  • Finish your project with self binding, using the backing fabric

These are techniques you can return to again and again in future quilting projects.

Red and pink floral quilt blocks form heart shapes on a wooden table. Spools of thread and plants are in the background, creating a cozy vibe.

Going Further

Once you’ve made the table runner, you can easily take this design further. The heart block works beautifully in a full quilt layout, and adding sashing between blocks can really help each heart stand out. You can also resize the block to make smaller projects like placemats or mini quilts - the construction stays the same, just scaled down, and I'll give you the cutting measurements to go two sizes smaller.
